Our journey with the Black License Plate began with a simple realization: the existing license plates are ugly! They failed to complement the sleek design of our all-black cars. But rather than settling for the status quo, we saw an opportunity to effect change even beyond automotive aesthetics.
With proceeds dedicated to causes close to our hearts – promoting safer roads for all road users, feeding those in need and promoting affordable housing – each plate sold supports our communities.
To make this vision a reality, we need your support. The DMV requires 500 pre-paid applications before considering our plate application. The deadline for the initial submission is February 15, 2025.

How do I apply for a customized black license plate?

How much does it cost to get a black license plate?
You have two options, the standard option is $50 which does not allow for any personalized text. The personalized option allows you to add up to four additional characters of text and is $100.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, contact us for a refund. If the application is not approved by the NC General Assembly the application fee will be refunded to you, less any additional donation amount to the organization or processing fees.

What information is needed to complete an application?
It’s quite a bit. The DMV requires completed application to include vehicle information, driver license information, insurance information and more. You can view the full application HERE. We collect the required information and will submit these applications in bulk to the DMV along with the payment.
Which organizations will my donation benefit?
The proceeds from the sale of this plate will be pooled as grants to various non-profit organizations around North Carolina. An emphasis will be made for non-profits whose missions emphasizes feeding and housing people. If you have a specific non-profit you would like us to consider, contact us.
Are you currently a non-profit?
Not yet. We are operating as a non-profit and we are in process of applying and getting certified with the state and the IRS for tax purposes.
We are also interested in partnering with existing non-profits.
How long does it take to receive my black license plate after applying?
We will apply for approval as early as February 15, 2025 with the expectation that the plate would not be delivered to you until summer of 2025. It's a long wait, but we think it will be well worth it.
What are the requirements for personalizing a black license plate?
When applying for a personalized license plate, the prefix or suffix assigned will be the first or last letter(s) on the plate. this leaves only four (4) spaces for a personalized message. the four spaces may be a combination of letters and numbers but cannot be numbers only or conflict with another classification of license plates. For this license plate we are planning on having the prefix be "BL" but we make no guarantees that this will be accepted.
Can I choose any combination of letters and numbers for my personalized plate?
